It was called Picture City before it was called anything else

A Basque French sheep herder named Pierre Agoure settled here in 1871, and when residents picked a one word name for the post office in 1927 they misspelled his. Before that the ground was part of Rancho Las Virgenes, granted in 1834. In the 1920s the place was briefly known as Picture City, because Paramount ran a ranch here and shot westerns on it. The city itself is modern, incorporated on 8 December 1982 as the eighty third in Los Angeles County.

The terrain is what kept the cameras coming. Ladyface Mountain rises to 2,031 feet directly above the freeway, Ballard Mountain sits opposite, and Medea Creek runs through the middle of town. Everything here reads as open country within forty minutes of a Hollywood stage, which is exactly why Paramount bought in and why the National Park Service ground next door still carries productions.

For a client that combination is unusually efficient. A single day here can put oak grassland, a creek bed, a ridge line and a modern office park on the same call sheet without a company move. We shoot commercials that need landscape rather than skyline, artist music videos on the canyon roads, and corporate video for the technology and games employers along the 101. The one thing the terrain costs you is sound. Ladyface funnels wind down toward the freeway corridor in the afternoon, so dialogue outdoors gets recorded in the morning or it gets recorded twice.

Oak, ridge and federal ground on the studio zone edge

Agoura Hills is where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the Conejo Valley, and the whole reason productions have come here since Paramount ran a ranch in the 1920s is that open country starts immediately.

Ladyface Mountain rises to 2,031 feet directly above the freeway and Ballard Mountain sits opposite, with Medea Creek running through the middle of town. The city covers roughly eight square miles that climb about eleven hundred feet from the valley floor, so a ridge line, a creek bed and a level street sit within a mile of each other.

The Reyes Adobe is the historic anchor, with an equestrian arena nearby and National Park Service ground next door inside the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. That combination gives an oak grassland exterior that reads as anywhere rural in California while sitting inside the thirty mile studio zone, which is the practical reason a Los Angeles crew can shoot here on a standard day rate.

The buyer side is not what most people expect from a town this size. The largest private employer here makes video games, and the businesses along the 101 corridor are technology, health and professional services rather than agriculture.

Two things shape a schedule. Wind funnels down toward the freeway corridor in the afternoon, so exterior dialogue gets recorded early. And the residential streets are quiet by design, which suits commercials and real estate films more than it suits a large unit move.

The largest private employer makes video games

Visual Concepts Entertainment employs 655 people in Agoura Hills. The City's 2025 Principal Employers schedule lists it under Software Development at 5.80 percent of total city employment, second only to Las Virgenes Unified School District at 876. Below those two: Motor Vehicle Software Corp at 534, VITU at 506, Private National Mortgage Acceptance Company at 309, A2 Biotherapeutics at 262, Teradyne at 210, Joni and Friends and Small Business Advertising at 200 each, and Cydcor at 147. Ten employers, 3,899 people, 34.50 percent of a total city employment figure of 11,300.

Software, vehicle software, mortgage servicing, biotech, manufacturing, a non-profit and a marketing firm. That is the local commissioning list, and it looks nothing like the scenery the city is known for. Recruitment and launch content for a games studio, trial and investor communications for a biotherapeutics company, and marketing material for a business whose own product is marketing. The City credits a low business license fee for holding that mix in place.

Housing runs to a published median home value of $1.21 million against $960,000 across Los Angeles County, with a 2024 median resident age of 45.4. Listing work here skews to established property rather than new build, and the notification exemption for still shoots under ten people is what keeps a quick stills pass practical.

Reyes Adobe, an equestrian arena, and federal ground next door

The Reyes Adobe Historical Site at 30400 Rainbow Crest Drive was built in approximately 1850 and is described by the City as Agoura Hills' first home, raised by Jose Paulino Reyes on land his mother Maria Antonia Machado acquired in 1845 as Rancho Las Virgenes. The City calls it a cultural landmark covering California rancho history, oral history and Spanish rancho architecture, sitting in the foothills beneath Ladyface Mountain along El Camino Real, and has built an interpretive centre and museum on the site. Public opening is limited to the second Saturday and third Tuesday of each month for self-guided tours, so access for a crew has to be arranged with the City at (818) 597-7361.

City parks and recreational facilities include softball fields, multi-purpose fields, picnic shelters at Morrison, Reyes Adobe, Sumac and Forest Cove Parks, ballfields at Chumash, Old Agoura and Forest Cove, and an equestrian arena. Old Agoura is the horse-keeping district and the arena reflects that. Reservations at the arena are capped at two hours a day for non-profit or private groups, which is a shooting-day limit before it is anything else.

Federal ground starts outside the city. Paramount Ranch and Peter Strauss Ranch are National Park Service sites inside the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and NPS lists film history at Paramount Ranch and permitted celebrations at Peter Strauss Ranch. The federal clock is nothing like the municipal one. Documents are due two weeks before a start date, four weeks for complex or multi-day projects, with no less than ten business days of processing, through the Office of Special Park Uses at 805-370-2308. Three days for a city permit; up to four weeks for the parkland visible from it.

Eleven hundred feet of altitude in 8.2 square miles

The City puts its altitude range at 936 feet to 2,036 feet and describes itself as perched on the western edge of Los Angeles County in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, rich with undulating hills and inspiring canyons, forty-five minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Population is 20,269 across 8.20 square miles, incorporated December 8, 1982, with an average climate the City puts at 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Eleven hundred feet of vertical inside a city that size is why two locations a mile apart hold different light and different temperature at the same hour. Canyon floors lose the sun early. Ridge positions keep it, and pay for it in wind.

Studio 47 is based in Westlake Village, the next city west on US-101, where the permit runs fifteen business days instead of three. Calabasas is east, with a second permit from LA County Fire on every job, and Malibu is over the mountains through the same film office and a different code.
