The Conejo Valley built its screen reputation on a working ranch. Janss Conejo Ranch carried television westerns and Disney productions through the 1950s and 1960s, including The Rifleman, Gunsmoke and Bonanza, along with Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier in 1955 and Westward Ho, the Wagons! in 1956, both starring Fess Parker. It Happened One Night shot in the area in 1934. Flaming Star brought Elvis Presley out in 1960.
Thousand Oaks sits at 890 feet with 126,966 residents, directly west of Westlake Village across the Los Angeles County line. Newbury Park is a community inside the city rather than a separate one, which catches people out on a call sheet more often than it should. Simi Valley, Moorpark, Agoura Hills, Oak Park and Lake Sherwood ring the rest of it.

Wildwood Regional Park runs 1,731 acres, the biggest contiguous open space unit in the city, mostly owned by the Conejo Recreation and Park District. Rancho Sierra Vista and Satwiwa, in Newbury Park, is National Park Service ground inside the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, carrying historic ranching structures and the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center. Between them you get oak savanna, grassland, rock and ranch architecture without a studio zone premium.
Two constraints are worth knowing before a schedule is built rather than after. The park district does not allow night shooting, and weekend shooting needs specific permission, so golden hour inside a district park is not a given and a Saturday is not either. We plan around both.
The built inventory answers the other half of the brief. The Civic Arts Plaza at 2100 Thousand Oaks Boulevard is a city facility with theatre and civic frontage. The City runs the Civic Arts Plaza theatres, a library system and TOTV, its government television channel, all under the department that now signs film permits.
The commissioning mix is broader than the biotech campuses suggest. Event producers book the Civic Arts Plaza, which the fee schedule carves out as an exception and prices separately from every other City building. Listing agents work housing stock across a city of 126,966 people at 890 feet, where a drone lift over a hillside property and a base camp on the street below can draw two different charges. Artists and labels come for the open space, then find the ridgeline they scouted belongs to the park district.
The City's staff report puts scale on it: more than 3,500 entertainment industry workers live in Ventura County, and county film impact peaked in 2022 above $90 million per an Economic Development Collaborative publication. Plan brand and product shoots against a department that is staffing up.
Studio zone split, terrain and travel
Roughly half of Thousand Oaks falls inside the thirty-mile zone and the balance sits in a secondary zone often treated the same way. Two addresses inside one city can carry different crew-cost treatment, and productions outside the zone may qualify for additional tax incentives. Check the address, not the city name.
The city stands at 890 feet, bounded by the San Fernando Valley to the east, the Simi Hills to the north and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south, roughly twelve miles inland with Malibu as the closest coastal city. The National Weather Service defines Santa Ana winds as strong, hot, dust-bearing winds descending toward the coast from inland desert regions, and names no season. Wildwood open space holds deer, bobcat, coyote and mountain lion, a real input to overnight equipment security.
